The DMRT vehicle on the north east side of Muckish last night
The Donegal Mountain Rescue (DMRT) team leader is advising climbers and hill walkers who are expected to be out late to contact them in advance and let them know where they are, how many are in their team and when they are due to leave the area.
The appeal comes on foot of the team spending five hours in freezing conditions on the side of Muckish last night searching for people following two reports of flashing lights on the north east side of the mountain. The team navigated their way to the Miners Path amid treacherous road conditions.
On arrival in the area the team found no vehicle. The team conducted a search of the area and contacted one of the callers who had reported the flashing lights to confirm they were in the correct location. The team members found fresh footprints in the snow and were able to establish that there were two sets of footprints - one set going up and the same set, being fresher, going down in the snow. While the torches were spotted coming down the mountain no car was seen leaving the area as the climbers had parked in the lower car park. The person reporting the flashing lights were unable to see a car leaving the area.
Temperatures on the side of the mountain last night, Friday, were -3 and the fresh snow was frozen. The team returned to base and were stood down at 22:26. The team leader appealed to people to let them know they are out walking or climbing saying 'It is massively beneficial to us if we are already aware that you are out there.'
They said: "People can see lights much easier on these clear nights and we are here to investigate these sightings, but it is massively beneficial to us if we are already aware that you are out there."
The DMR team asked people to be aware that freezing conditions are forecast again for the end of next week.
