There is significant progress in the campaign for improved community hospital facilities in Lifford with news that a new site has been identified.

Following talks between the HSE and Donegal County Council, a 3.5 acre site has been identified on the outskirts of the town. Plans for the site include a new community hospital, a primary care centre, and 177 parking spaces.

The Department of Health has indicated that the HSE can now move to apply for funding.

This follows a lengthy campaign to retain and improve community hospital facilities in the border town.

Pearse Doherty TD (SF) said: “Something we have fought a long time for has taken a step closer to becoming a reality today with the news that a 3.5-acre site has been identified for the new Lifford Community Hospital.

“This is very encouraging news for the area and I know it has already been welcomed by the Friends of Lifford Hospital.

“I would also like to again commend the local community and Friends of Lifford Hospital for all the great work they have done up to this point. We in Sinn Féin will continue to work with them to ensure that progress is made as quickly as possible on the Hospital’s construction.”

It is hoped that work will begin as soon as possible, given the poor state of the existing hospital building.

An inspection in July 2021 by the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) found that the leaking roof, highlighted in a previous inspection, had caused extensive damage. Internal ceilings and walls in a number of resident areas were affected.

According to the inspection report: “As a result the well-being and safety of the residents were significantly impacted by the very poor condition of the premises in which they were accommodated.

“Following the inspection the provider was required to carry out an immediate fire safety risk assessment for the building and to submit the report to the Chief Inspector.”

The Friends of Lifford Hospital group has welcomed news of the site being identified, and has thanked everyone who supported the campaign over the years.
