Andy, left and Joe side by side at an Inter Firms race in Letterkenny a number of years ago.
Hundreds are expected to converge on Crossroads, Killygordon, this weekend for the inaugural walk-run in memory of the late Joe Carlin and Andy Scanlon.
The charity event, in aid of youth development at four local clubs, will take place at 12 noon on New Year’s Day, January 1.
Andrew (Andy) passed away suddenly aged 56 on December 13, 2020, while Joe lost his battle with cancer less than a year later, on September 18, 2021, at just 54 years-of-age.
Both men were neighbours, lifelong friends and fierce competitors on the athletics circuit around the county and beyond.
As the country returned to some semblance of normality following almost two years of Covid restrictions, their friends and family decided to organise this event in their memory.
“We want to give everyone the chance to start the New Year afresh with Joe and Andy in mind,” said chief organiser, Declan Carlin.
“You will also be helping to support youth development at Curragh Athletic FC, Markievicz Camogie Club, Red Hugh's GAA Club and Setanta Hurling Club.”
It should be noted that this will not be a clocked/timed race and is hoped to be nothing more than a leisurely walk or run.
The 5K route will start and finish at Dromore National School, taking in a loop of the scenic Monellan Wood.
Free entry - donations only. Tea and refreshments will be served afterwards in the CAKE Centre where a raffle will also take place with a number of superb hampers/vouchers up for grabs!
To enter the draw, just register from 11am at Dromore school.
Ample parking will be available at The CAKE Centre, Dromore School and at the various car parks at Crossroads village.
