Motorsport Ireland President Aidan Harper believes the Wilton Recycling Donegal International Rally is the ‘jewel in the crown’ of the Irish racing calendar.

At the launch of the three-day event in front of a huge crowd in the Public Services Centre in Letterkenny, fans gathered to witness the launch, which took place on Friday night for the event starting on June 20.

There was excitement in the air as the entry list was announced and sponsors Wilton Recycling committed to another three years of sponsoring the event, while competitors, with the entry list confirmed, spoke of their fondness for the event, affectionately agreed upon as the highlight of the racing calendar in the country.

And President of Motorsport Ireland, Aidan Harper, agreed with the sentiment.

“It’s an incredible family here in Donegal, and it’s the first event any competitor puts in their diary; everybody wants to be here.

“For us in Motorsport Ireland, it’s the jewel in the crown and there’s no doubt about that, and working with the Donegal Motor Club is an incredible experience.

“The Rally itself is the envy of Europe and beyond. When you talk about the Donegal around Europe, everybody knows what you’re talking about.

“There’s a three-day endurance, but it’s not just those three days, the rally itself will start two weeks before for competitors for their reconnaissance.

“This event takes around 2,000 volunteers, and we have to respect them because without them, we don’t have an event.”
