Killybegs lad Jayden McBrearty finished P2 twice at Mondello Park

Jayden McBrearty was on the podium twice at Mondello Park this weekend.

After the break for exams it was back to Mondello for round 5 and 6, the mid way point, of the Irish Championship Circuit Racing.

Friday was free practice day, giving McBrearty a chance to get back into the car and make any set up changes.

The Killybegs lad was joined by Alex Denning, who is competing in the GT3 series driving a Lamborghini. His experience and advice was of great benefit to the Donegal youngster.

Saturday was a rest day with racing starting on Sunday morning, which began positively.

Things were looking good in the first 2 sectors of the final lap, but it didn’t come together. McBrearty was held up on his flying lap behind two slower cars and, despite them receiving a blue flag, they still impeded the Killybegs driver.

Nonetheless it left Jayden fourth in qualifying going into Race 1.

The first race started with rain, spicing things up on the grid. A car stalled on the line, causing mayhem as three cars further back collided whilst trying to avoid the stalled car, triggering a complete restart.

On the second attempt the top four got away evenly. McBrearty pushed on, setting fastest lap times early on in the race.

This left Jayden passing third and in the hunt for second. The pressure got to the front cars and one of the cars made a mistake running wide. McBrearty didn't miss the opportunity and kept the push on to take second and catching first place fast but ran out of laps. McBrearty finished race one in P2 having started from P4.

Race 2 brought more drama. Circuit racing wheel-to-wheel action can bring all kinds of drama and on the damp track on lap 2, a challenging competitor rolled at turn one causing the race to be halted under a red flag.

A full restart again worked to McBrearty’s benefit. He was off and flying with more impressive times, driving a fantastic race and holding P2 comfortably while chasing down the race leader by setting fastest times again.

The countdown was the only thing that stopped McBrearty from catching P1 but P2 was another great finish.
