Gardaí detect cars travelling at EXTREME speeds as Bank Holiday weekend begins

Gardaí are urging motorists to stay safe over the Bank Holiday weekend after detecting hundreds of cars speeding over the past twenty four hours. 

The call comes following the detection of a vehicle travelling at 203km/h in a 120km/h zone during GoSafe roads policing. 

GoSafe checked 157,420 vehicles for speed over the course of the operation and detected 348 vehicles speeding. 

Top detections included 84 Km/h in a 50 Km/h zone, 112 Km/h in a 60 Km/h zone, 147 Km/h in a 80 Km/h zone, 166 Km/h in a 100 Km/h zone, and 203 Km/h in a 120 Km/h zone. 

Additionally, twenty eight people were found to be driving under the influence of an intoxicant. 

According to Gardaí, two fatalities have occurred over the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of fatalities this year to 102. 

In a statement, they Gardaí said, "Whatever reason you're using the roads this weekend and whatever your mode of transport may be - we're appealing to you to stay safe on the roads this weekend.

"We are out helping to keep the roads safe and ask for your support by staying vigilant and avoiding risk."
