IRISH tourists in France may have thought they drank too much wine when they saw a Limerick garda on the beat but au contraire they were correct.
Dr Loïc Guyon, of the Honorary Consul of France, Limerick, congratulated Limerick-based Garda Gavin Hughes, who made the French news as he was patrolling in Giverny with French colleagues, on Twitter
“Two garda members were deployed to France during July and August. This is the second time this scheme has taken place, with the last being in 2022. The deployments take place in areas which are very popular amongst tourists, allowing garda members to assist Irish nationals visiting the area.
“The garda members patrol alongside their French counterparts. This exchange offers many learning opportunities for the policing bodies of both France and Ireland,” said Dr Guyon.
Garda Hughes spoke to French media, telling them, “We work here to improve the relationship with the tourists who come from abroad to visit”.
Garda Hughes, who can converse in Irish, English or French, was at the home of the founder of impressionist painting, Claude Monet, at the time.
“You also like Claude Monet, if I’m not mistaken?” asked the interviewer.
“Yes, of course. It’s funny because when I was younger, I studied art history in school so it's a treat for me to be here, at a house that's very well known to everyone,” replied Garda Hughes, who returned to Limerick this month.
A garda spokesperson said they temporarily deployed two garda members to France during July and August, after a request from French authorities.
“The primary purpose of the deployment is to assist French police in engaging with Irish nationals visiting the area and is similar to arrangements in other areas of France involving the temporary deployment of German, Spanish and Dutch police officers,” said the garda spokesperson
A number of gardaí will also be deployed to work with the French authorities in assisting Irish rugby supporters travelling to France for the Rugby World Cup this month.
