Irish parents divided over teacher's 'ruling' on answer to this kid's maths question

Irish parents have been clashing on Twitter over a teacher's 'ruling' on the correct answer to a maths question in a child's school book.

Sunday Independent journalist Mark Tighe shared a photograph of a child's work book with a number of maths problems.

He claimed there was a "controversial ruling" from the teacher to a questions about the number of corners in a semi-circle.

The child answered '2' but was deemed incorrect by the teacher with the correct answer being marked as '0'.

Tighe captioned his post: "Hmm. Controversial ruling from the múinteoir here on "how many corners does a semi-circle have."

A number of other people reacted with the question very much dividing opinion.

One said "lodge an appeal" while another suggested a "VAR" check.

Someone else said: "If you define corner as a 90-degree angle between two lines, then yeah none."

Another primary school teacher even chimed in to suggest the child was right with their answer.

He posted: "I reckon there’ll be some argue this, but your child seems to be right. If the definition of a corner is where two lines meets, but doesn’t specifically state it has to be straight lines, then a semi-circle has 2 corners. But, if the definition being used is two straight lines, then it’s 0. "

Another woman added: "It should be vertices, not corners. Just saying."
