Legendary broadcaster confirms plans to step down from flagship radio programme

Keith Finnegan was inducted into the Irish Radio Hall of Fame last year

Legendary broadcaster Keith Finnegan has announced he's to depart his role at local radio station Galway Bay FM later this year.

Keith, a hugely familiar voice on the airwaves in the west of Ireland, has presented the station's flagship show 'Galway Talks' for more than three decades.

Confirming that he will present his final mid-morning show on April 12, Keith, who entered the Irish radio Hall of Fame last year said the last 34 years have been a privilege.

The former CEO of Galway Bay FM, which broadcasts across Galway city and county, says his decision was not made lightly and comes after extensive contemplation and discussions with his family.

With almost 34 years of service, including 20,000 hours behind the microphone, Keith believes the time is right to pass the reins to a new voice.

Reflecting on his remarkable tenure, Keith shared some personal and professional highlights on this Monday's programme, including daily interviews with local and international guests, participation in the three-day charity event Radiothon, an invitation to the White House for St. Patrick's Day, and leading the St. Patrick's Day parade as Grand Marshal in St. Louis alongside Joan.

His achievements include winning IMRO radio awards and induction into the IMRO Hall of Fame, all made possible by the exceptional team that surrounded him.

"I joined Radio West, as it was called back then, in 1989. At that stage I was doing a Saturday and Sunday music programme. I eventually became CEO and a director at the station, then two years ago I stepped down from those other duties to concentrate on this show alone, and that worked out extremely well, I think. The time has come to hand over the reins to somebody else.

"I wish those who are taking over after 12 April the best of luck, they deserve it. It's an honour that I love, it's an honour I will miss, but it is time for someone new to come in and do the job.

"I have a few projects, some exciting projects, in the pipeline but now is not the time to speak about that today."
