High visibility speed enforcement activity is being conducted on Irish roads until April 20

Gardaí spot just 34 speeding vehicles in first two hours of National Slow Down Day

Just 34 vehicles have been caught speeding in the first couple of hours of National Slow Down Day. 

According to An Garda Síochána, 21 vehicles travelling in excess of the applicable speed limit were detected out of a total 16,344 vehicles checked by GoSafe in the first two hours of this morning (April 19). 

A further 13 vehicles travelling over the speed limit were detected by Garda personnel. 

High speeds recorded include 84km/h in a 60km/h zone on the R139 in Belcamp, Dublin 17, 109km/h in an 80km/h zone on the R314 Rathroeen in Ballina, Co Mayo, 132km/h in a 100km/h zone on the N13 Teevickmoy Stranorlar, Co Donegal. 

It also includes 64 km/h in a 50km/h Zone on the Dublin Road, Co Kilkenny, 63 km/h in a 50km/h Zone on the Monivea Road, Co Galway, 95 km/h in a 80km/h Zone on the N55 Lissoy Glasson, Co Westmeath, and 113 km/h in a 100km/h Zone on the N30 Ballymackesy in Enniscorthy, Co Wexford. 

The checks have been underway since 7am and will continue until 7am tomorrow morning (April 20). 

An Garda Síochána would like to thank drivers for their compliance during the first two hours of ‘National Slow Down Day’, making Irish roads safer for all road users. 

They continue to appeal to drivers to comply with speed limits in order to reduce the number of speed related collisions, save lives and reduce injuries on Irish roads.
