Third illegal drugs haul from Asia to Ireland in just two weeks seized by Revenue

Another major illegal drugs haul sent from Asia to Ireland in just two weeks has been seized by Revenue.

It is the third such seizure from that part of the world in just over a week, with Revenue officers seizing almost €1.4 million worth of drugs between May 20 and June 4.

Over 19kg of herbal cannabis with an estimated value of €380,000 was seized at Dublin Airport yesterday (June 4) after being discovered in the baggage of a passenger who had disembarked a flight originating from Malaysia.

A man in his 30s was subsequently arrested by An Garda Síochána and detained overnight under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act, 1996 at a Dublin Garda Station.

He is due before the courts this morning (June 5).

Officers also seized 43.1kg of cannabis with an estimated value of €862,000 at Dublin Airport on June 2 after being discovered in vacuum-packed packages within the baggage of two passengers who had disembarked separate flights originating from Thailand.

A man in his 30s and a man in his 50s were arrested by An Garda Síochána under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act, 1996.

They have since been charged and both appeared before the courts on June 3.

Revenue officers, with the assistance of detector dog Grace, seized over 7kg of cannabis with an estimated value of almost €142,00 during the course of numerous operations from May 20.

Various quantities of other illicit drugs, with an estimated value of over €3,300, were also seized

The illicit drugs were discovered, as a result of risk profiling, in parcels originating from Thailand, India, the UK, Spain, the USA, and Canada and were intended for addresses nationwide.

A quantity of retail goods, with an estimated value of approximately €388,000, was also seized due to infringements of Intellectual Property Rights.

Investigations are ongoing.
