A motorist is facing a possible driving ban after they were caught travelling at high speed on one of the busiest roads in the country.
Gardai have highlighted the detection which was made on the M7 in County Laois at the weekend.
In a post on social media, they say members of the local Roads Policing Unit spotted a red BMW car which was "moving at a whopping speed".
The vehicle was then stopped and pulled over and the driver was "immediately arrested".
According to gardai, the vehicle was detected travelling at a speed of 190km/h in a 120km/h zone on Saturday.
While a photograph of the car which was posted on Facebook and X (formerly Twitter) shows an 'N' plate displayed in the front windscreen, there has been no comment by gardai regarding the category of licence held by the driver.
The driver was subsequently charged with dangerous driving and is due to appear before Portlaoise District Court in the coming weeks.
If the motorist is convicted of an offence under Section 53 of the Road Traffic Act, a mandatory disqualification will be imposed. Other potential penalties include a fine and a prison sentence of up to six months.
