A man is being questioned by gardai following a significant drugs seizure at Dublin Port during an intelligence-led operation.

Around 40 kgs of Cocaine, with an estimated value of €2.8 million, was discovered on Sunday by Revenue officers using a mobile X-ray scanner.

"The illicit drugs were discovered when a vehicle that had disembarked from a ferry from Cherbourg, France was stopped and searched. The drugs were concealed in the floor cavity of the accompanying trailer," said a Revenue spokesperson.

"A man in his 50s was arrested by An Garda Síochána and is currently detained, under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act 1996, at a garda station in Dublin," they added.

In a separate statement, issued this Monday evening, a garda spokesperson confirmed that investigations are ongoing and that the drugs seized will be forwarded to Forensic Science Ireland for analysis.

Subject to court orders, the man who was arrested following the discovery of the drugs can be detained without charge for up to seven days.

Revenue says the seizure is part of its ongoing operations targeting organised crime groups and the importation, sale and supply of illegal drugs.
