Tributes have been pouring in for the well liked and respected community man including Fermoy area county councillor Deirdre O'Brien who said she knew Mr O'Keeffe and his family.

She said: "I offer my deepest sympathy to them all. It is tragic for his good long life to end in such a sad manner,

“Thinking of everyone involved here today. No one, would want something like this to ever happen.”

Local Fine Gael councillor Noel McCarthy said people in Fermoy are "shocked" as he praised emergency services for acting so quickly on the scene.

Mr. McCarthy said: “Fermoy is shocked that something like this could happen in the car park of a SuperValu. It’s such an unfortunate incident,

“It’s all over Fermoy that he’s a hero, that’s what they’re saying.”

A woman in her sixties was also airlifted to Cork University Hospital following the accident to be treated for injuries which are considered to be serious. It has been reported that Mr. O'Keefe had pushed out of the way of the vehicle before it struck and killed him.

A man in his nineties who was the driver of the vehicle was treated at the scene.
