BREAKING: Man hospitalised following major garda standoff with driver barricaded in van blocking road

Gardaí were rushed to the scene of an incident of a busy Sligo town this afternoon which resulted in a lengthy standoff between a man and negotiators.

The incident occurred on the Main Street in Collooney, County Sligo this afternoon, where a van was left blocking the road.

The alarm was raised after a man reportedly barricaded himself inside the van and produced equipment believed to be suspicious.

Gardaí initiated its 'Hostage Barricade Suicide' protocol, and local Garda negotiators along with several other units attended the scene.

A cordon was put in place, and a media blackout was issued while Gardaí attempted to resolve the escalating situation.

Gardaí successfully negotiated with the man to leave his vehicle after some discussion.

He has been since been taken to Sligo University Hospital for medical treatment.

A Garda spokesperson confirmed that investigations are ongoing.
