A man has been pronounced dead after he was recovered from the Grand Canal in Co Kildare.

Gardai are appealing to witnesses of the incident at Grangeclare West in Kilmeague on Sunday evening.

The incident occurred at approximately 8pm when it is believed a car entered the Grand Canal.

A man, aged in his 40s, was recovered from the water and treated by crew from the National Ambulance Service. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The body of the man has been removed from the scene and a post-mortem examination will take place.

The scene was being held for examination by forensic investigators and the Garda Water Unit on Monday morning.

Access along the canal at the scene was restricted.

Those with camera footage, including motorists with dash-cam, from the area at the time are asked to provide it to investigating gardai.
