Taoiseach finally receives St Patrick's Day invitation to White House after speculation

Taoiseach Micheál Martin has finally been formally invited to the White House to meet US President Donald Trump for St Patrick's Day celebrations.

There has been great speculation surrounding this year's visit as to whether Trump would invite the Taoiseach to Washington given its delay and the recent controversy surrounding Trump's comments on Gaza and Ukraine.

Despite calls from the opposition for the Taoiseach to boycott the visit, he has accepted. The invitation is for Wednesday, 12 March - an entire week before St Patrick's Day.
