RIP: Elderly man (80s) dies in hospital just days after horror assault in Tipperary

A man in his 80s has died following a serious assault in Tipperary town on Friday night.

The man was seriously injured in the incident which occurred at around 9.35pm on St Michael's Avenue, and had been in critical condition at University Hospital Limerick since.

Gardaí confirmed this morning, Monday, that he has since passed away.

The local coroner and the Office of the State Pathologist have been notified, and a post-mortem will take place in the coming days.

A man in his 30s who was arrested over the weekend remains in custody under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at a Garda station in Co Tipperary.

A Senior Investigating Officer is leading the inquiry, while a Family Liaison Officer has been appointed to support the victim's family.

The street where the assault took place was sealed off for technical examination over the weekend.

Gardaí first issued an appeal for witnesses on Saturday, before later confirming the arrest.

Gardaí are again appealing to anyone who was in the St Michael's Avenue area between 7pm and 10pm on Friday, September 12, to come forward. They are particularly interested in anyone with video footage, including dashcam, that may assist the investigation.
