The Minister for arts and culture recently astonished an audience at Collins Barracks Museum with an unconventional story. 

Limerick-born Patrick O’Donovan told the media: “There was thirteen of us in the house when we were growing up. We had one toilet. If you were a boy and you had to make number one, you were told to ‘go to the country’.”

“When I remember the 1982 elections, there was three of them and Haughey talking about going to the country. Garret fizgerald was a great icon of mine, even though my Mother, the Lord have mercy on her, had a great time for Charlie Haughey but I liked Garrett Fitzgerald, he had the curly hair.” 

“Well I always felt if it’s good enough for Charlie Haughey and Garrett Fitzgerald to take a p*ss outside, it’s good enough for me.”

Journalist Hannah Murphy for Virgin Media News put the video on social media, accompanied with the comment: “Sometimes a doorstep with a minister meanders to places you could never imagine.”

Another journalist commented: “I’m told he regularly gives this speech at events!”

One Instagram user commented on the video that O'Donovan is “Ireland’s most culchie minister”.
