Volunteers have removed several bags of discarded and rotting pumpkins from Lisnagra Woods despite repeated warnings about the dangers Halloween waste poses to wildlife and the woodland environment.

An Inishowen Conservation Group has renewed its appeal to the public to stop dumping unwanted Halloween pumpkins in Lisnagra Woods after volunteers were left to remove several bags of discarded pumpkins in the days following Halloween.

The Lisnagra Conservation Group, which works to protect and preserve the woodland and its wildlife in Muff, had erected warning signs throughout Lisnagra in October, highlighting the environmental dangers of leaving unwanted pumpkins in the woods.

Despite the warnings, the group revealed that volunteers collected two bags of discarded pumpkins from the woodland on November 2, with further collections taking place later in the week.

In a post shared on social media, the group expressed its frustration at the continued dumping, particularly given the efforts made to raise awareness ahead of Halloween.

They said: "In spite of our signs, despite our own and other social media posts, in spite of local city and county councils issuing advice on how to legally and responsibly dispose of pumpkins. In spite of all this, we gathered two bags of discarded pumpkins in Lisnagra this morning, and it's only the 2nd of November."

The group added that people should by now be aware of the potential harm discarded pumpkins can cause to the woodland and its inhabitants, stressing that "there is no excuse".

The conservation group also reported removing another bag of rotten pumpkins this weekend, describing the situation as "so disappointing".

They reminded the public that leaving pumpkins in Lisnagra or any other woodland amounts to illegal dumping and appealed to people to stop the practice.

Ahead of Halloween, the group had outlined several reasons why discarded pumpkins can be harmful to the natural environment.

These include the risk of severe digestive problems for smaller mammals, which can prove fatal for hedgehogs.

They also warned that pumpkins which have been treated with chemical preservatives, coated in wax or contain foreign objects such as sparklers can pose a poisonous threat to wildlife.

The Muff organisation explained that as pumpkins decompose on the forest floor, they can alter soil chemistry and interfere with the delicate balance of the woodland ecosystem.

They also warned that large piles of rotting pumpkins can attract numerous animals to a concentrated area, including scavengers and predators, potentially increasing the spread of chronic diseases among wildlife.

Instead of leaving pumpkins in woodland areas, householders are urged to dispose of them responsibly by placing them in their brown bin or adding them to a home compost heap.

The group is now appealing to the public to respect Lisnagra as an important natural habitat and recreational amenity, and to ensure that Halloween waste does not become an environmental problem for the woodland.
