There were pointers to the past at the Donegal Novice Championship finals on Sunday – including a victory for the grandson of a Donegal boxing legend.

There were six Championship finals in Carndonagh on Sunday with the day filled by support bouts.

Brian Anderson, a grandson of Brian Anderson senior, who competed for Ireland at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo, was among the winners.

Anderson won the Boy 3 52kgs title. The Twin Towns BC lad took a 4-1 split decision against Carrigart's Killian Caldwell.

In 1965, his grandfather became the first Irish Elite champion from Donegal, defeating John Maloney to win the light-welterweigt title.

Raphoe Boxing Club's Tyler Keaveney – son of club coach Gerard – was an impressive winner of the Boy 1 37kgs final.

Keaveney swept the boards for a clean sweep of the cards against St Bridget's Michael McGonigle.

Illies Golden Gloves' Jack Curran claimed a 3-1 split decision in the Boy 3 54kgs final against Twin Towns' Jack Barron.

Dara Docherty, also of Illies Golden Gloves, stopped Conor McFadden of Dunfanaghy in the Boy 1 33kgs decider.

In the Boy 4 54kgs final, Corin McLaughlin was a unanimous decision winner against L Loftus in an all-Carndonagh bout.

Carrigart's Mark Ward stopped St Bridget's man Dermot Doherty to land the Boy 6 63.5kgs crown.

There will be one another final boxed in Letterkenny on Tuesday night as Ballyshannon pair Alex McAleer and Seamus Warnock square offin the Senior 63.5kgs final.
