Ben Walsh tasted European success when he landed the FEI Jumping Ponies Trophy in Mechelen, Belgium.

The 16-year-old was up against some of the continent’s best young riders over the festive period.

But both he and his mare, Derryvane Bell, under the guidance of Ronan McLaughlin at Malin Stables, topped off what was already a superb 2022 with their win.

Prior to their December triumph, Walsh and Derryvane Bell produced five clear rounds in three days at the European Pony Trails. They also jumped double clear with the Nations Cup team in Zuidwolde, helping secure a brilliant victory for the Irish Team.

They also placed second in the 1.25 speed class in the FEI Ponies Jumping Trophy in Lyon where they eventually took third in the 1.35 Lyon Grand Prix.

Following that, there was another really impressive showing in Stuttgart, where they claimed second place in the 1.25 speed at the FEI Ponies Jumping and fifth the the 1.35 Grand Prix.

“Ben has put in a huge effort and this achievement is simply amazing,” said Caroline McLaughlin, Malin Stables. “The level Ben has been at, it takes so much dedication, effort and hard work.

“Ben has been with us at Malin Stables since he was a very young boy. And it’s been great to see that development up close. But 2022, he’s had an outstanding year. Myself and my husband Ronan, we both travelled out with our kids to cheer Ben on.

“Ben’s twin sister Kadie also came along with us. Again, to be there and take an event in, at that level, we were all just so proud. The lesson for any other wee kids out there dreaming… hard work pays off and Ben’s achievement is testament to that”.

After a short break, Ben is now back in the saddle as he prepares to move to the next level in 2023.

“Ben now progresses on to horses and he’ll be jumping at Junior level which is 16-18-years-old. It’s an exciting progression for him but he’s taking huge confidence into all of that now”.
