Caolan McFadden back to cross country for Ulster schools win

McFadden was among the Donegal medallists in Mallusk with St Columba's College, Stranorlar winning gold in the junior girls' race

Caolan McFadden surged to his latest gold medal on Wednesday.

At the NASUWT Ulster Cross Country Championships in Mallusk, McFadden won the intermediate boys race,

The Cranford AC athlete, in the colours of Loreto, Milford, won in 15 minutes and 57 seconds.

Last weekend, in the Junior Boys' International Mile, at a World Athletics Indoor Tour gold level meet in Boston, McFadden finished 10th in 4:25.84.

St Columba’s College, Stranorlar won team gold in the junior girls’ race.

Finn Valley AC trio Nia Byrne (13th), Holly McNulty (14th) and Aimee McElchar (19th) scored with solid runs to all place in the top 20.

Just three days after competing at the European Club Cross Country Championships, Eimear McCarroll took silver in the senior girls’ race.

The Finn Valley AC athlete, competing for Loreto, Omagh, finished in 12:08.

On Sunday,  in Oropesa del Mar in Spain, McCarroll came 13th as Finn Valley finished eighth.

Her club colleague, Sarah Bradley, running for Loreto Secondary School in Letterkenny, was sixth in the senior girls’ race.

Loretta Secondary School from Letterkenny took team silver in the intermediate girls event.

Anna Russell finished 11th with Emma Bonar (16th) and Sarah Henry (17th) also scoring.

In the same race, Royal & Prior Comprehensive School’s Elsa Moore came 19th.

In the junior boys’ race, St Columba’s College man Odhran McBrearty was sixth.

Cathal Doherty in eighth led the charge for St Eunan’s College, Letterkenny to finish third junior boys team.

Doherty was backed up by Rohan McMenamin in 16th, Callum McGilloway in 57th and the 76th-placed Patrick McHugh to take team bronze.

Andrea Reid from St Columba’s College, Stranorlar was fourth in the minor girls’ race while McCarroll’s brother, Ciaran, crossed the line in 15th in the intermediate boys’ race.

In the senior boys’ event, Moville Community School’s Andrew McCarron (36th), Michael McCarron (39th) and Jason Lynch (41st) were in the top 50.

St Columba’s College intermediate boys of Lorcan Byrne, Ronan McHugh, Brian Lyons and Tristan Harron were the eighth team.
