Mark Alcorn.
An encounter with a bale on the penultimate stage helped deny Mark Alcorn a second win in the 2023 National Tarmac Championship on Sunday.
Having won the National event in Galway last month, Alcorn was looking good going into the final two stages of the Midlands Stages Rally.
The lead was slender, just 2.2 seconds, after SS7 with Gary Kiernan hot on the Termon man's heels.
Alcorn, this time co-driven by Domhnall McAlaney, collided with a ditch and a wall over SS8 and their chance slipped.
In the end, Kiernan had just 4.9 seconds to spare on the Mk2 Escort of Alcorn.
A second-placed finish still gives Alcorn valuable championship points following another useful competitive outing.
“It was good,” Alcorn said. “It was enjoyable.”
Rainfall played games with Alcorn's hard tyre choice at stages, but the Donegal man, backed this year by Ronhill Ltd, was firmly in the hunt all the way to the end and he finished ninth overall.
Lettermacaward's Declan Boyle, in a VW Polo, was seventh overall.
The Donegal crew of Ryan MacHugh (Frosses) – the Irish Tarmac Junior champion last year - and Declan Boyle (Glenties) were second in class 2 in a Ford Fiesta Rally 4.
