Donegal boxers Caoimhin Connolly and Conan Kearney will look to follow their William Wallace Box Cup golds by getting their National Senior Cadet Championship bid off to a positive start this weekend.
Twin Towns BC man Connolly and Kearney, of the St Bridget’s club in Clonmany, nabbed gold in Stirling at the weekend for the Donegal squad.
Connolly overcame Liam Moohan to land the 44kgs decider while Kearney bagged the 66kgs crown.
Connolly is in semi-final action this Saturday morning at the National Stadium. Connolly faces Michael O’Reilly from St Paul’s in Waterford.
Kearney will take to the South Circular Road canvas on Friday evening. Kearney is in a quarter-final against Gareth McCann of the St Oliver Plunkett club in Antrim.
In 2021, Kearney was the Irish Boy 2 56kgs champion and has emerged as one of the county’s leading lights.
Raphoe Boxing Club’s David Tennyson will also be in a quarter-final on Friday evening. Tennyson goes head-to-head with Patrick Kelly in a 57kgs tie.
While Tennyson was in Scotland, losing out to Logan Rae in a quarter-final, Kelly, from Kilmyshall was overcoming St Nicholas’ Tommy Finn via a unanimous decision in his preliminary round contest in Dublin.
Over 180 boxers from 107 clubs are contesting the 2023 National Senior Cadet Championships.
