The annual Senior Open tournament returned to Letterkenny Tennis Club throughout the August bank holiday weekend.
Players from all corners of the country descended for another action-packed event at the northwest regional tennis centre.
Ever-changing weather proved a challenge to competitors, yet a high quality of tennis was displayed continuously.
Letterkenny Tennis Club is currently undergoing major developments, including court resurfacing, floodlight replacement and the installation of a clay court.
While a tournament originally appeared unlikely due to this maintenance, a brief hiatus in all construction opened the opportunity for the competition to proceed.
Men’s and Ladies’ Grade A, B, C singles/doubles were open for entry, totalling 62 players competing. With such a robust entry, scheduling of matches proved to be a complex task.
As with any tournament at LKTC, the club strives to accommodate the unavailability of all competitors, thus creating a welcoming, amiable environment for all those who enter.
Matches began at 9:30am each day, with the last matches of each day commencing at 9:30pm. Long days of matches ensued but the consistent cooperation of all competitors allowed the games to progress seamlessly throughout the weekend.
A number of notable local success stories emerged as the tournament concluded. Congratulations to club members Amit Neogi and Hannah McIlwaine, who triumphed in the Men’s Singles C and Ladies’ Singles C events respectively.
Many other club members missed out narrowly on gold and were runners-up in their events, including: Laura Boal in the Ladies’ Singles C, Sarah Keane and Jan Lewis in the Ladies’ Doubles C, Julia Wawrzyniak in the Ladies’ Singles B, Beth Cottrell and Julia Wawrzyniak in the Ladies’ Doubles B, Davin Blake in the Men’s Singles C and Cian Blake with his partner Maxim Dobrynin in the Men’s Doubles B.
As another successful competition closes at Letterkenny Tennis Club, Tournament Coadjutants, Gerry Clarke and Julia Wawrzyniak, Tournament Referee, Beth Cottrell.
Director, Cian Blake would like to express their sincere gratitude to all players/spectators who supported the event throughout the weekend and all those who contributed towards the tournament behind the scenes.
Junior coaching classes for all ages resume in conjunction with the school calendar and adult coaching classes return in September. Text 086 380 9398 for more details.
