St Johnston Cricket Club marked its 125th anniversary on Friday night, holding the club’s annual awards function at Bishop’s Gate Hotel in Derry.

St Johnston CC was formed in 1898, initially playing non-competitive games, before moving to a new ground at Altaskin and gaining entry to the North West League in 1922.

Their greatest hour came in 1987 when they won the Irish Senior Cup, beating Brigade at Beechgrove by seven wickets to become the first North West winners.

They also won the North West Senior Cup in 1959, 1975 1978 and 1982, with Ian Ranking scoring at the time a record-breaking 167 not-out in the ’82 final.

On Friday night, current club chairperson Andrew Fleming hailed the contributions of the founding members and those who have kept the club batting over the years. He noted the significance and importance of the ladies team as the Railway Road club looks forward to a bright future.

Lawrence Moore represented the North West Cricket Union and praised St Johnston as ‘an honest club’. Noting the quality of individuals within St Johnston CC he said: “It's a proper cricket Club”.

A fireside chat-style interview with James Fleming and Ian Ranking was held by Moore.

Emma Macbeth, who is making waves as a scorer at St Johnston and outside of it, was named as the Club Person of the Year, and also took the bowling award for the ladies 1st XI.

Former Ireland international Graeme McCarter was named as the 1st XI Player of the Year. Dawie Barnard and Jack Macbeth grabbed the awards for the 1st XI bowling and batting.

When Jack Macbeth scored 162-not-out against Letterkenny at the ‘Boathole’ in the Sammy Jeffrey Shield in June, it was the highest ever tally scored by a St Johnston player at home.

His tally was only 11 runs shy of the best ever innings record by a Saints batsman. Keith Lapsley, the man who clipped 173 in an away game at Crindle, added to the historic feel of the night and connections between past and present as he acted as MC on Friday.
