Brilliant Inishowen through to The Foster Cup semi-finals

Despite the difficult conditions, Inishowen dug in to take a superb one-point victory over Limavady in this top-of-the-table clash

Brilliant Inishowen through to The Foster Cup semi-finals

Inishowen, who qualified for the Foster Cup semi-finals at the weekend

On a windy day, Inishowen faced a top-of-the-table Limavady side in what was sure to be a tight game at Moss Road in the quarter-final of the Foster Cup.

The home side played with the wind in the first-half and immediately gave away territory and went behind to an early penalty to leave it 0-3 to the visitors.

It took the home side ten minutes to get on the scoreboard when a spectacular crossfield kick from Scott found Cantwell who did well to catch and ground the ball in the corner leaving it 5-3.

After a good steal by the forwards in kickable distance Scott extended the lead for the home side to 8-3. The visitors then very nearly got in under the posts only for McKeague holding the ball up as the player crossed the line.

Another penalty shortly after put the home side 11-3 up before a penalty for the visitors clawed it back to 11-6 at the break.

Inishowen made hard work of the first half and truth be told discipline was poor. However whatever was said at half-time worked for they massively improved on the second-half.

Another penalty by Scott put the home side eight clear which was just as well for when a high tackle close to the line lead the referee to issue a yellow card and award a penalty try it became a one-point game at 14-13.

The home side was playing better at this point but the game was still disjointed and while the effort and workrate of the likes of McGonagle, Scott and Browne couldn’t be questioned.

The game was very much in the balance until McConalogue got a pen in front of the posts and even though it was a fair distance out Kantwell in the absence of Scott kept his nerve and slotted it through to force the visitors to go for a try.

That was vital as they had to spurn a kickable chance late on to go for the line as the three points wouldn’t be enough. In a frantic final few minutes Inishowen held out to seal the win.

It was a great day for the whole Peninsula from the tots leading the team out before kick-off to a thrilling game and a fantastic result.

There’s no doubt the massive support on the sidelines played a huge part in getting the team over the line. The team will play the Semi-final on March 2 against Belfast Academy.
