Mark English finished 12th at a Diamond League meet in China on Saturday to open his outdoor season.
The Finn Valley AC runner clocked 1:47.14 at the Egret Stadium in Xiamen in a field that included some of the world's best over 800m.
Over two laps of track, Marco Arop, the 2023 World Championships gold medallist, won in 1:43.61. The Canadian was just ahead of Wyclife Kinyamal, the double Commonwealth Games gold medal winner from Kenya (1:43.66) and African bronze medallist Tshepiso Masalela (1:43.88) from Botswana.
English, who is coached by Feidhlim Kelly, went through 400m in fifth, the Letterkenny native taking the bell in 51.5 seconds.
English, the Irish 800m record holder, competed at the 2016 and 2021 versions of the Olympic Games and the 31-year-old doctor is aiming to make it to this year's Olympics in Paris.
English elected to side-step the National Senior Indoor Championships in February and the World Indoor Championships in Glasgow in early March to turn his focus on the outdoor term, with the Olympic Games on the menu.
The four-time European medallist started 2024 encouragingly, going 1:46.61 at the Millrose Games in New York having clocked a new Irish indoor 600m record of 1:64.61 at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix in Boston.
