Donegal athletics stalwart Bernie O'Callaghan has been elected as the new President of the Ulster Athletic Council.

The Killybegs AC man was appointed to succeed Fr Peadar Corragain from Monaghan and will hold the post for a three-year term.

O'Callaghan is a founder member of the Killybegs AC and was also a founder of the Donegal County Board.

He has held high-profile roles at paovincial and national levels, includuing a 15-year term as the Donegal County Board secretary and nine as the Ulster secretary.

A 13-time National Senior gold medalist as a race walker, he was named on the Donegal Athletics Team of the Millenium and has been inducted into the hall of fame at Donegal and Ulster levels.

As a masters athlete, he won a bronze medal in the 3,000m walk at the first European Indoor Championships in Birmingham in 1997 and he has also served as a board member with Athletics Ireland.

His son Pierce is currently the Director of Competition at World Athletics.

Bernie's grandaughter Savanagh (Pierce's daughter) was last year selected for the Irish Schools team and was recently the first non-American to win the Penn Relays walk in Philadelphia while her sister Taillte and Csuisle have also won national titles.
