Mark English breaks Irish 800m record again

Competing at Meeting Madrid just three days after confirming his place at the 2024 Olympic Games, the Finn Valley AC man took 0.16 of a second off his Irish record

Mark English shaved another .16 of a second off his Irish 800m record.

Competing at Meeting Madrid, English clocked 1:44.53 on Friday night.

Three days after confirming his place at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris with a 1:44.69 run, the Finn Valley AC man took further time off his mark.

At the Estadio Vallehermoso, the 31-year-old doctor was fourth in a fine field for a second PB of the week.

Eliott Crestan pf Belgium, the bronze medal winner at the World Indoors, won in 1:44.28.

Spaniard Adrian Ben was second in 1:44.41 with South Africa's Edmund Du Plessis third, edging English in 1:44.49.

Meeting Madrid is a World Athletics Continental Tour silver level meet.

On Tuesday, at the Paavo Nurmi Games in Turku, Finland, English brought down his Irish record by 0.02 seconds wen dipping ahead of Benjamin Robert to finish in 1:44.69 for second in the race – and to punch his ticket for Paris.

Previously, the Letterkenny native competed at the 2016 and 2021 editions of the Olympic Games.

In qualifying for the last Olympics in Tokyo, English broke David Matthews' long-standing Irish record when running in Castellon, Spain.
