Matt Edwards has one day to go at the Donegal International Rally where he hopes by the end of it he will have won his first title in this county, but he knows there is still a long way to go.

At the closing of Stage 12 of the Donegal International Rally, Edwards and David Moynihan, in their Ford Fiesta Rally 2, held a 25-second lead over the reigning champions Callum Devine and Noel O’Sullivan in their Skoda Fabia Rally 2.

But Devine gained 7.8 seconds on Edwards during Saturday’s final stage around Lough Keel leaving it a closer affair coming into the final day on what has already been a nip-and-tuck event at the top.

“It was a long day but we still have the lead just about, it was a difficult day because the weather was changing and it was hard to gauge, but we’re happy with today’s work and hopefully we can increase the lead with a good start tomorrow,” said Edwards.

“It was a difficult day in terms that it was nip-and-tuck, each of us all had a good stage at some point and then each of us had a little problem here and there, but that’s the name of the game.”

With the final day approaching, Edwards is in a good position to win the title in Donegal for the first time, but he knows he can’t afford to give an inch, but he has praised his opponents for challenging him all day.

“We still have to go hard tomorrow to keep the lead, there’s no room to back off,” he said. “Clearly Callum is going well because we were trying really hard all day and it didn’t really make much difference to the time, so he’s staying with us.

“You’ve got no room in your mind to think about anything else other than going flat out and that’s what we’re doing. We’re not thinking about anyone else.”
