Irish athletics star Kelly McGrory
As she prepares to realise her own Olympic dream, Kelly McGrory says young kids shouldn’t put any type of ceiling on their own sporting ambitions.
The 27-year-old Tir Chonaill AC woman is currently in Paris and is part of both the Irish mixed 4x400m and women's 4x400m squads.
McGrory has a sports science degree from DCU and is based in Limerick where she works for Irish Wheelchair Association Sport.
And speaking at the University of Limerick just prior to her departure, the Donegal athlete admits she never once contemplated that she might hit the levels she’s now achieving.
“I’d say it’s surreal more so than just a dream as it had all seemed so far out of reach when I was a juvenile,” she explained.
“My advice is to stick with your sport and do it because you love it. When I was younger I stayed in it because I just loved being there with my friends. The main thing is to enjoy it.
“After that, don’t put a limit on yourself. I always had this perception of the level I could reach.
“It never disinterested me in the sport but I definitely should have had a lot more belief in myself. Shoot for the stars as when you’re a kid you’ve no idea what your potential might be.
“Don’t put a ceiling on yourself. Be that six-year-old kid saying ‘I’m going to go to the Olympics when I’m an adult!”
