Mona McSharry's Olympic Games ended on Saturday afternoon as the Irish 4x100m medley relay team missed out on qualification for the final.

Ireland finished in sixth spot in their semi-final, coming back in a new Irish record of 4:00.12.

Five days after winning individual bronze in the McSharry ran the third leg, the breaststroke.

McSharry was joined by Danielle Hill, Ellen Walshe and 16-year-old Grace Davison from Bangor for the event that sees competitors team up for backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and freestyle legs.

The Irish quartet swam out of lane 1 in the second of the two semi-finals and Hill, having swam earlier in the day in the 50m freestyle, had Ireland in fifth after the opening leg.

McSharry, the 100m breaststroke bronze medallist, ate up the water and had the Irish in second when she passed onto Ellen Walsh after a 1:05.38 leg,

Ireland touched the wall in seventh but, with Italy having been disqualifed, they were elevated to sixth.

The first semi-final was won by Australia in 3:54.81, ahead of China in 3:56.34 with hosts France third in 3:57.40.
