Olympic bronze medallist Mona McSharry has announced that she will be taking a four-month break before deciding on her future in swimming.

The Grange native, who trains in Ballyshannon, received a warm welcome alongside her Ireland team-mates during Monday afternoon's homecoming in Dublin City centre.

McSharry, aged 23, secured Ireland's first medal at the record-breaking Paris Olympics, winning bronze in the women’s 100m breaststroke.

Immediately after her performances in Paris, McSharry suggested that this was ‘most likely’ her final Olympic appearance.

However, when asked on Monday about continuing her elite career for another Olympic cycle, McSharry told RTÉ: “We’ll take it one year at a time.

“I’m taking four months off to chill and then we’ll see . . . if I miss it that much or want to move into the next phase of life – but, yeah, we’ll see.”
