Fintan Dewhirst qualifies for the 400m hurdles semi-final at World U20 Championships

Tír Chonaill AC athlete Fintan Dewhirst will run in the 400m semi-final on Friday

Fintan Dewhirst produced an excellent run to come second in his heat in the men's 400m hurdles at the World Athletics U-20 Championships in Lima, Peru.

The Glenties native who trains out of Tír Chonaill AC was second at the halfway point, and held that position before finishing in a time of 52.39, just behind Vance Nilsson of the USA, who clocked 51.98. Third spot went to Lucas de Almeida from Brazil who finished with a time 52.76.

The Donegal man looked to go into the race with real confidence as he shouted “I love you mum” into the camera before taking up his position in lane seven.

In the fourth of seven heats, only the top three in each are guaranteed to progress to the semi-finals, which are scheduled to take place on Friday morning.

Dewhirst set a new Donegal record to qualify for the World Athletics U-20 Championships back in May, when he, alongside his brother, were first and second over the 400m hurdles at the May Open in Morton Stadium, with Fintan, the 2022 European U18 silver medallist, winning in 51.19 seconds.

It’s been a busy time for the Glenties man who was scheduled to pick up his Leaving Cert results last Friday but at the same time they dropped, he was already on his way to South America.
