Doherty and McCready take Donegal Masters Cross Country titles

Jon-Jo Doherty of Finn Valley and Rosses AC's Helen McCready took the Donegal Masters Cross Country golds on Sunday and their respective clubs toasted the team golds

Jon-Jo Doherty of Finn Valley AC and Helen McCready won the Donegal Masters Cross Country titles in Stranorlatr on Sunday.

On home soil, Doherty led Finn Valley AC to the men's team honours while McCready's victory saw Rosses AC edge their hosts for the women's team crown.

Doherty powered home to victory in the men's race. Doherty completed the 5k course with a bit to spare.

Gerard Gallagher, also of Finn Valley AC, came second with Marty Lynch of Milford AC in third.

Doherty was joined by Gallagher, Enda Doherty (5) and John McElhill (6) as Finn Valley grabbed the men's team gold.

Milford, led by Lynch and aided by Joe Gibbons (7), Anthony Doherty and Paddy Ryan were second with Cranford – who had Liam Doherty (9), Seamus Kelly (13), Hugh Duffy (16) and Declan McBride (17) scoring taking the team bronze.

McCready shook off Leoni Cooke of Finn Valley on the final lap of the to win the women's race, held over 3k.

McCready had around 10 seconds to spare as they crossed the line after a neck-and-neck battle. Cooke led for some of the way, but McCready clicked the gears on a fine morning by the Finn to take victory.

Catriona Devine of Finn Valley completed the podium with a solid third-place finish.

McCready, Bernie Boyle (4), Fionnuala Diver (5) and Nicole O'Donnell (10) took Rosses to team gold, with just four points to spare on the Finn Valley AC quartet of Cooke, Devine, Maggie O'Hara (6) and Joanne McNabb (13).

The women's O50 team gold went to Tir Chonaill's trio of Julie McNamee, Jackie Harvey and Marie Rooney while Inishowen won the men's O50 gold with Philip Callaghan, Owen McKinney and Damian Downey scoring.
