Olympians Sophie Becker and Kelly McGrory with the Team of the year award on behalf of the Women 4x400m relay team
The Irish Athletic Awards were held on Wednesday night in Santry, Dublin, with Donegal’s Kelly McGrory among the notable winners.
McGrory, a standout athlete from the Tir Chonaill club, was honoured as part of the women’s 4x400m relay team, which claimed the prestigious Team of the Year award.
The team earned this recognition after setting a national record and finishing fourth at the Paris 2024 Olympics, with McGrory playing a key role by running in the heats to secure their spot in the final.
Their outstanding year also included a silver medal performance at the European Championships earlier in the season.
"My highlight was watching the girls run in the final and seeing Ireland at the front of the pack of the Olympic final," McGrory said on the night.
"It was just such a monumental moment and I think it'll change the way we approach our sport and the way Ireland are going to be perceived in the future in athletics."
Rhasidat Adeleke was named 2024 Athlete of the Year on the night in Santry.
The Tallaght AC athlete didn’t quite get on that Olympic podium in Paris over the summer but it was nonetheless a sensational year for the 22-year-old who continues to set new standards for Irish sprinting.
