Letterkenny Shotokan Karate Club representative Gerard Foley
Gerard Foley, representing the Letterkenny Shotokan Karate Club, returned from the Karate Ireland National Championship in Waterford with an impressive collection of medals.
The event, held at the SETU Arena, brought together karate practitioners from across Ireland to compete in a variety of disciplines, including Kobudo (weapons), Kata (technical demonstrations), and Kumite (sparring). Participants of all ages and abilities, including inclusive categories, showcased their skills in what proved to be a thrilling day for competitors and spectators alike.
This marked Foley's second appearance at the championship, having earned a gold and bronze in 2023. With the pressure to match his previous success, he rose to the occasion, securing strong results once again.
In the Kobudo category, Foley used the tonfa (nightsticks) to claim bronze, finishing third. He also earned another bronze in Kata, demonstrating precise technique, and capped off the day with a silver medal in Kumite.
“Competing is the best way to assess your strengths and weaknesses,” said Foley. “This time, I realised my Kumite needs improvement, so that will be my focus going forward.”
Foley expressed gratitude to the sensei at LSKC—John Wilkie, Christopher, and Peter—as well as to his fellow club members for their support. While adverse weather, injuries, and scheduling conflicts limited the club’s representation at the event, Foley credited the strong backing he received from those present.
He also thanked Karate Ireland for their seamless organisation of such a significant event, ensuring a memorable experience for all involved.
