Bridge workshop being done by Dr Gay Keaveney
The Donegal International Bridge Congress marked a return to its former glory this year, the first time since the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic.
At the Congress Reception, Margaret Doherty, President of the Donegal Bridge Congress 2024, warmly welcomed distinguished guests, including Catherine Byrne, President of the Contract Bridge Association of Ireland (CBAI); Heather Hill, President of the Irish Bridge Union (IBU); and Harold Curran, President of the Northern Ireland Bridge Union (NIBU). Dermot O’Brien, CEO of the CBAI, was also acknowledged for his presence and support.
Doherty extended heartfelt thanks to key contributors, including Fearghal O’Boyle, Mairead Basquille, and Huey Daly, for their ongoing efforts, as well as the local committee led by Jim O’Sullivan. She also expressed gratitude to the Abbey and Central Hotels, event sponsors, and all who participated in the Congress.
Catherine Byrne shared her enthusiasm for her first visit to the Donegal Congress, expressing her intention to return next year. "Bridge is a wonderful game, and there is always something new to learn as we play," she remarked.
Heather Hill commended the committee for delivering another exceptional event and provided insight into the work of the Irish Bridge Union, which oversees international competitions. She highlighted the participation of three Irish teams in the World Championships, with one team performing particularly well despite the high costs of participation.
Harold Curran described the Donegal Bridge Congress as the best in Ireland and possibly the world, praising the warm atmosphere and excellent hospitality provided by the hotel staff. Dermot O’Brien celebrated the presence of many new players in the novice and Intermediate B sections, calling it an encouraging sign for the future of the game.
In addition to the intense bridge competitions, attendees enjoyed a full program of events. Saturday began with a fashion show hosted by Donegal’s Elite Boutique and Peter’s Man Shop at the Abbey Hotel, followed by Dr Gay Keaveney’s annual workshop and a full day of bridge, culminating in a dance at the Central Hotel with music by Jody Gallagher. Sunday’s activities included a wine and canapé reception before the presentation of prizes.
Margaret Doherty closed the event by congratulating the winners and thanking everyone for their participation. She expressed her hopes for an even larger gathering next year, encouraging attendees to bring friends along to experience the Congress.
