Donegal Motor Club veteran Francie Devine has been recognised with the prestigious Manus Kelly Memorial Cup, awarded during the 2024 Marshal & Motorsport Volunteer Appreciation Awards held last Saturday.

This accolade, named in memory of Donegal’s beloved motorsport icon Manus Kelly, celebrates the outstanding contributions of volunteers in Irish motorsport. Devine, a dedicated figure in the club for over three decades, has become a respected presence across Ireland. Most recently, he served as a marshal at the Killarney Historic Rally, exemplifying his enduring commitment.

Throughout his long career, Devine has taken on a wide array of roles, from timing and sector marshalling to acting as stage commander. For many years, he was Chief Marshal at the hugely popular Knockalla Hillclimb, working alongside the late Danny Gormley and Micheál Kelly, who were Clerks of the Course. The Knockalla event was a standout in the Irish Hillclimb Championship, earning the title "Hillclimb of the Year" on multiple occasions.

In addition to marshalling, Devine has also competed as a navigator, teaming up with some of Donegal Motor Club’s most thrilling drivers. He has partnered with Ramelton’s Willie McFadden in his G3, John Dolan in a Mk2 Escort, Mark Ewing in a Type R Civic, and even tackled the Ulster Rally alongside his nephew Marty Devine.

During his acceptance speech, Devine expressed gratitude to the countless volunteers and competitors he has worked with over the years. He fondly reflected on the friendships he has formed across the Irish motorsport community and the warm hospitality he has experienced during his travels.

Now in its sixth year, the Volunteer Appreciation Awards celebrate the tireless efforts of individuals who make motorsport events across Ireland possible. The 2024 ceremony, held at Armagh Rugby Club, was organised by Stage Commander Caroline McGuinness and highlighted the indispensable role of volunteers in the sport’s success.
