Letterkenny Karate Club
Members of the Letterkenny Shotokan Karate Club celebrated the end of the year with a special grading ceremony, where students proudly received new belts in recognition of their progress.
Both junior and senior students had worked diligently in preparation for the exams, aiming to take the next step on their journey towards the coveted black belt. The grading panel, which included Senseis John Wilkie, Christopher O’Donnell, and Peter Ogle, assessed the students’ skills and dedication.
A total of 40 members successfully advanced to their next belt, a testament to their commitment and hard work.
However, the day was not solely about belt advancements. Medals were also awarded for displaying exceptional spirit during the event. Scott Sweeney, Lily Gallier, and Vibhas Akella were each recognised for their outstanding efforts, earning high praise from the senseis.
The most prestigious accolade of the day was the Gillen Perpetual Cup, awarded annually to the Student of the Year. This year, the honour went to Teresa Gallagher for 2024. Named after Jimmy Gillen, the club's founder in the 1960s, the award celebrates dedication and achievement throughout the year.
The club also expressed their gratitude to the Letterkenny Community Centre, which serves as their base. Liam O’Donnell, manager of the centre, addressed attendees during the event, highlighting the urgent need for a new extension. Fundraising efforts are underway through a “buy-a-brick” campaign to support the project.
“2025 is going to be even better!” declared Sensei John Wilkie during the ceremony. “For anyone considering New Year’s resolutions, the Letterkenny Shotokan Karate Club will return in January. Everyone is welcome—any age, any ability. Remember, showing up is half the battle won.”
