Ciaran Doherty of Letterkenny Athletic Club (LAC) and Charlie O’Donnell of RAC shared the top honors on the day
The 10th official Darren Mills Memorial Run unfolded on St Stephen’s Day in ideal conditions, marking 13 years since the event's inception in 2011.
The festive, relaxed run has become a beloved tradition for members of the Rosses Athletic Club (RAC), with loyal participation even during the challenging Covid years.
The course, an undulating 6km out-and-back route, offered runners scenic views and a variety of terrains. Starting at the Viking House, participants crossed the bridge onto Cruit Island and continued to the Darren Mills Memorial before turning back. The final stretch included a stubborn uphill climb to the finish at St. Mary’s Hall.
Ciaran Doherty of Letterkenny Athletic Club (LAC) and Charlie O’Donnell of RAC shared the top honors, finishing together in first place. Hot on their heels was RAC’s Declan Gallagher, who had previously used this event as a springboard for a strong competitive season.
In the women’s section, Helen McCready of RAC claimed victory, with Claire Reid, a Belfast-based runner affectionately embraced by the club, taking second place. The under-16 category saw standout performances from Aileen Logue, who led the girls, and Evan Ward, who topped the boys’ leaderboard.
Younger runners also had their moment to shine in a 1km race.
The Darren Mills Memorial Run remains less about competition and more about community. Recognition goes to those who show up year after year to honor the memory of Darren Mills and bring neighbors together in the spirit of camaraderie and health.
