Fun, connection and movement are the aims of a new eight-week Athletics for Children With Autism programme which began on Monday.

The programme, the first of its kind in Donegal, started with over a dozen children at Finn Valley AC in Stranorlar.

Run in partnership with Donegal Sports Partnership and Healthy Ireland, the initiative provides a fun, inclusive, and supportive environment for children to engage in athletics.

“With a focus on running, jumping, and throwing, the programme encourages participation, social interaction, and enjoyment, rather than competition,” says Adam McGranaghan, a sports development officer at Donegal Sports Partnership who was present on the opening evening.

A further roll-out of the programme will take place with Tir Chonaill AC.

Organisers say that the specially-tailored strategy reinforces a commitment to inclusive and accessible sports for all children.

The participants, split into two groups at different intervals, were under the direction of Ann Slevin, schools coach at Finn Valley AC, who says the first day “was truly inspiring”.

“Seeing the children engage, smile, and enjoy movement in a supportive environment was incredible,” she said.

“The energy was positive, and each child brought their unique strengths to the session. We are focused on creating a structured yet flexible atmosphere where every participant felt comfortable and included.

“This is just the beginning - and we’re excited to continue fostering confidence, friendships, and a love for athletics in these amazing young people.”
