Mark English set a new Irish indoor 800m record in New York.

At the Millrose Games, the Finn Valley AC man clocked 1:45.15, becoming the first Irish man to run a 1:45 indoors.

English was fourth in the race but, after four laps of The Armory track, he smashed his previous Irish record.

In 2021, English finished in 1:46.10 at the National Indoor Championships in Dublin.

English - managed by Pace Sports Management, headed by Milford native Ricky Simms - shaved almost a second off that time in the Big Apple on Saturday night.

Josh Hoey of United States won in 1:43.90 - also a new national record - with Bryce Hoppel second in a 1:44.19 personal best.

Jonah Keoch was third, crossing the line in 1:44.82, also a PB and then came English, the 31-year-old medical doctor with the latest lowering of the national best.

A four-time European medallist and three-time Olympian, the Letterkenny native will target a latest national title later this month with the European Indoors on the horizon in March.
