European Indoor bronze medallist Mark English has withdrawn from the World Athletics Indoor Championships.

The Finn Valley AC athlete picked up an illness in the wake of collecting a bronze medal at last weekend’s European Indoors in Apeldoorn.

English clocked 1:45.46 in the 800m final to take third spot - and a fifth European medal - at the Omnisport.

English, who turns 32 on Tuesday, has confirmed that he will not compete in Nanjing next weekend now.

“I’m dealing with an illness that I picked up since the European Indoors in Apeldoorn,” he said. “Massively disappointing for me personally, but I want to wish the Irish team and my Fast8Track Club teammates the very best of luck”.

The Letterkenny native has been in excellent form this year, clocking a new Irish indoor 800m record, 1:45.15, while running at the Millrose Games in New York.

English had been set to travel to China via a stopover in Dubai, but his focus will now turn to the outdoor season.

He said in Apeldoorn: I would like to renew that record I ran last year. I think I am capable of running a 1:43 at least so I would like to do that.

“It’s something to look forward to in the summer.”

English holds the Irish outdoor 800m record, the 1:44.53 he set in Spain last summer at Meeting Madrid.
