Mona McSharry gears up to begin World Championship bid in Singapore

The 24-year-old Olympic bronze medallist, will dip in the water of Singapore Sports Hub in the early hours of Monday morning for her first major race since the 2024 Olympic Games

In the early hours of Monday morning, Mona McSharry begins here World Championships bid.

The 24-year-old Olympic bronze medallist, will dip in the water of Singapore Sports Hub for her first major race since the 2024 Olympic Games.

After winning that bronze in Paris, Marlins Swimming Club graduate McSharry took some time off and was five months out of competitive action in the pool before returning to action with the University of Tennessee.

Last summer, on her way to the Olympic podium, McSharry, a native of Grange, clocked a new Irish record, 1:05.51. 

McSharry is part of a 12-strong team that will compete and she will go in the 100m breaststroke heats just after midnight on Sunday night.

At the recent Irish Open Swimming Championships, McSharry won the 100m breaststroke final in 1:06.87, sealing her place at the World Championships in the process. 

McSharry competed in the 2023 World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan, finishing fifth in the 100m breaststroke final.

She also participated in the World Aquatics Championships in Doha in February 2024, placing fifth in both the 100m and 200m breaststroke finals.

At the Sette Colli International meeting in Italy at the end of June, McShary finished in both the 100m and 200m breaststrokes.
