Sixth for Mona McSharry in 200m breaststroke final at Swimming World Cup

After setting a new Irish record to reach the final, Mona McSharry has finished sixth in the 200m breaststroke final at the World Aquatics Swimming World Cup.

The Marlins Swimming Club, Ballyshannon swimmer touched the wall in 2:20.03 in the final at the Carmel High School Natatorium in Carmel, Indiana.

World record holder Kate Douglass from the United States won gold in 2:13.97 with Anna Elendt from Germany second (2:17.80) and South Africa’s Rebecca Meder third (2:18.14).

Olympic 100m breaststroke bronze medallist McSharry finished sixth, with Alex Walsh from USA and Australian Ella Ramsay just in front, after going second in her heat in a new Irish record of 2:19.95.

The Grange native was the third fastest qualifier for the final.

McSharry will go in the heats of the 100m breaststroke - her favoured event - on Saturday afternoon.

The three-stop series of the World Aquatics Swimming World Cup will continue in Westmont, Illinois on October 17-19 and Toronto on October 23-25.

Earlier this year, McSharry exited the 100m breaststroke at the World Aquatics Championships at the semi-final phase and had to skip the 200m due to a stomach bug. 

In her 100m semi-final at the Singapore Sports Hub, McSharry finished in 1:06.33 having won her heat in 1:05.99 and missed out on a final spot.

In 2024, McSharry won Olympic 100m breaststroke bronze in Paris.
