Finn Valley AC man Oisín Ó Gailín broke a 44-year-old record running in the United States last weekend.

Ó Gailín, a student at the University of Wyoming, was competing at the Colorado Invitational.

In the mile run, Ó Gailín ran 4:00.41, finishing fourth.

That effort saw him shatter a record that was held by Kenyan-born Mike Cherono since 1978.

Having first attended the University of Alabama, the Ballybofey man took up a scholarship at the University of Tennessee at Martin in 2019.

In the autumn of 2021, Ó Gailín moved to University of Wyoming.

He was seventh in the Irish national senior 1500m final in August ’19 (3:51.58).

At the Music City Distance Carnival in the summer of 2019, Gallen set a new Finn Valley club record for the 1500m, his 3:46.39 breaking Noel Collins’ previous best of 3:46.47.

Next weekend, in Washington, Ó Gailín will target a sub-four mile.
