John Kelly returned to action in winning fashion

John Kelly made his long-awaited competitive return to action with a notable win in Sweden.

The Finn Valley AC man won the men’s shot put at the 2022 Växjö Indoor Throw competition.

Kelly won with a 18.22m best - a throw not far off his indoor personal best of 18.35m.

The St Johnston man had throws of 16.99m, 17.85m, 17.69m, 17.62m and 17.56m with his 18.22m-winning effort coming with his second attempt of the day.

Great Britain’s Youcef Zatat was second in 17.60m with George Hyde, another Briton, third with a 16.28m throw.

Kelly has been out of action for a considerable time, a foot injury 18 months ago necessitating treatment in Sweden and London.

Coached by Vésteinn Hafsteinsson, Kelly works closely with an elite group in Växjö that also includes Swedish discus thrower Daniel Ståhl, a 2019 World Championship gold medalist in Doha.
